At Avas Support, we believe in the power of lived experience—Disability support services that stem from real understanding, resilience, and a commitment to making a difference. Samantha, our Participant Services Facilitator, embodies this belief. For her, disability support work isn’t just a career—it’s a calling shaped by her own life story.
A Childhood Rooted in Disability Support And Inclusion
Samantha grew up in Ipswich, Queensland, in a home where disability inclusion wasn’t just accepted—it was embraced. At two years old, her older sister joined the family through kinship care. With complex care needs, her sister’s birth family could no longer meet those needs, so Samantha’s parents stepped in.
For Samantha, disability wasn’t something different—it was just family.
“My sister was never excluded from anything we did. We travelled, visited theme parks, swam with dolphins, helped turtle hatchlings, and tobogganed in the snow. She had all the life experiences. It wasn’t until I got older that I realised not every family was like that.”
Her parents both worked in disability support services—her mum started in the sector at 15, and her dad transitioned from the military into support work. Disability inclusion was simply a way of life.
At 15, Samantha’s family became foster carers to two brothers with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Doctors warned them that travel would be too difficult, but Samantha’s mum didn’t believe in “can’t.”
“Not only did we travel across Australia, but the boys even got to snorkel the Great Barrier Reef. There’s always a way.”
Later, another younger sister with lissencephaly joined the family. Blind, deaf, and unfamiliar with human touch, she slowly learned to trust and connect. Through food, movement, and persistence, she blossomed into someone who loved yoga, hugs, and cruising holidays.
“Each of my siblings was unique, and I loved finding new ways to create opportunities for them to thrive.”
A Passion for Disability Support in Ipswich
Samantha’s upbringing led her to study psychology, and she completed her undergraduate degree with the goal of helping others. When it came to choosing a career, NDIS support coordination felt deeply personal.
“I’ve always had a desire to help people. Helping my siblings live full and happy lives was challenging but incredibly rewarding. A career in NDIS support coordination merges both my passion and experience.”
After seeing family, friends, and her own brother receive NDIS-funded support through Avas Support, she witnessed the impact firsthand. So, when the opportunity to join the team arose, she felt like the perfect fit.
A Day in the Life of a Participant Services Facilitator
As a Participant Services Facilitator, Samantha’s role is all about people. She helps participants reach their goals, builds teams of NDIS support workers who truly connect, and ensures participants feel heard, valued, and empowered.
“It’s about being a listening ear, a compassionate problem solver, and making sure everything is in place so participants get the support they need.”
Her experiences have shown her that every individual is different. Even two people with the same diagnosis may have entirely different needs. That’s why she ensures a person-centred approach, tailoring services to the individual.
Perspective, Resilience & Inclusion
Losing each of her siblings was incredibly difficult, but their impact remains. They taught her:
- Perspective – Seeing life from different viewpoints.
- Patience & Resilience – Overcoming obstacles, no matter how big.
- Perseverance – There’s always a way to make things happen.
“With a little love, time, and my mum’s ‘nothing is impossible’ mindset, I learned to find solutions where others saw barriers.”
She has volunteered at disability adventure camps and all-abilities sports programs, reinforcing what she already knew—disability doesn’t define someone; their experiences do.
Helping Participants Find Their Voice with Disability Support
Samantha is passionate about helping participants find the right NDIS support worker who understands their goals, communication style, and individuality.
“There’s no greater feeling than finding the perfect match between a participant and a disability support worker—someone who helps them thrive.”
She builds trust-based relationships with participants and their families, ensuring they feel safe giving feedback—positive or negative—so they always have a say in their support.
“Participants should always feel respected, supported, and empowered. My job is to amplify their voice, not speak over it.”
One of the most rewarding parts of her job?
“Seeing participants who have struggled with making friends build real connections—not just in group settings, but friendships that extend outside of activities. That’s true community.”
Looking Ahead: Empowering Participants in Ipswich
Samantha’s problem-solving mindset drives her work at Avas Support. She is always looking for ways to remove barriers, create opportunities, and help participants define what an abundant life looks like for them.
Her message to participants and their families:
“We are a team who genuinely cares. We will stand beside you in the tough times and celebrate every success, big or small. You are not just a number at Avas Support—you are part of our community.”
